YOUTH & TEEN PROGRAM


Why enroll your child in an improv class?

Improv classes are perfect for cultivating the skills to make friends, improve basic listening skills, build confidence, and refine the art of teamwork -all while having fun!

This 8-week program taught by a veteran iO performers, is offered in three different age groups: Pre-Teen (ages 10-13),  Teen (ages 14-17), and Youth (ages 5-9.

Each term will culminate in a family-friendly performance, showcasing each group and the improvisational skills they’ve learned!

Pre Teen One Week Improv Summer Camp

In Chicago's only longform improv intensive for students ages 10 to 13. Students will enjoy learning "yes, and" through game play in a camp style setting. Students will simultaneously build friendships through camp games and ensemble through improv theatre exercises. Each day of the week focuses on a fundamental principle of improv comedy such as Yes-And, Finding Inspiration, Group Mind, Character, and Performance. They'll also have the chance to implement the collaborative skillsets learned of group-based improv into some introductory comedic sketch writing and performance.

This camp culminates in an improv comedy performance on Friday, June 28th for family and friends.

The camp will meet from Monday, June 24th - Friday, June 28th from 9am - 3pm.

Youth Improv Program (4 Week Class)

If your child is a budding young actor, iO Theater's Youth Improv Program is the perfect introduction to rehearsing and basic improvisation! Teaching Artists focus on team building, self esteem, and quick thinking to build toward a final presentation. Students will learn improv and acting fundamentals while finding time for games, too! Join us for four weeks of having fun and being funny!

There will be a class presentation on the 4th week of class.

About the instructor:
Rebeccah Singer is originally from St. Louis and has been performing since age 11 and teaching since age 18. She holds a BFA in Acting from Syracuse University and teaches all over the city. At iO, you can catch her with her Harold team, Gideon, or with the all female storytelling and improv show Having It All.

When: Sundays, April 28th - May 26th from 10am - 11:30am. There are 4 class meetings. No Class on Mother's Day (5/12).

iO's premiere Pre-Teen Improv Program Ensemble is an introductory team-based class for young adults aged 10-13. Whether your pre-teen is interested in the performing arts, comedic writing, or the self-presentation skills so important to the college application process, this program cultivates a highly useful set of skills- both creative and social. The iO Pre-Teen Improv Ensemble rehearses for two hours each week using iO's classic team-building exercises, working towards a foundation of trust and self-sufficiency on stage and beyond, sans script.

The 8-week term culminates in a family-friendly show featuring some basic long-form improv in iO's classic style, alongside material developed through the rehearsal process.

About the instructor:
Lisa Burton is a transplant from Minnesota where she studied and performed at Brave New Workshop Theatre in Minneapolis. She has now been in Chicago and part of the iO family for 10 years. She performed with Second City Theatricals on cruise ships and can currently be seen performing with iO Harold team Devil’s Daughter as well as Musical Armando on Friday nights.

When: Sundays, April 28th - June 16th from 2:00-4:00pm. There are 8 class meetings.

About the instructor:
Gretchen Eng has been performing improv and sketch comedy in Chicago since she was a teenager. She teaches in the iO Training Center, in addition to Roosevelt University's Chicago College of the Performing Arts. She produces and performs with the Armando Diaz Experience (Mondays) and the Teacher Jam (Wednesdays) at iO, and has taught at numerous international improv festivals. Additionally, Gretchen has worked in youth improv programming at The Revival Theater as well as the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools and the Summer Youth Arts and Media Camp at Columbia College.

When: Sundays, April 28th - June 16th from 4:00-6:00pm. There are 8 class meetings.
